Dirndl meets Hollywood – The Sound of Music
Salzburg Museum on tour
The Salzburg Museum is holding an exhibition at the Salzburger Heimatwerk.
Duration: 03.07.2025 until 31.10.2025
Opening times are the same as those for the Salzburger Heimatwerk
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the world-famous Hollywood film “The Sound of Music” (1965), starring Julie Andrews. It tells the story of Maria von Trapp (1905–1987), who, in 1925, was sent from Nonnberg Abbey to the Trapp family, to be their children’s governess after they had lost their mother. The film is based on the 1959 Broadway musical of the same name, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein. This, in turn, was preceded by Maria von Trapp’s autobiography (1949) and two German film adaptations: Die Trapp-Familie (1956) and Die Trapp-Familie in Amerika (1958).
As is evident from several historical documents, the real Trapp family has maintained close contact with the Salzburg Heimatwerk for decades. This connection still exists today. The Salzburg Museum’s guest appearance at the Salzburger Heimatwerk is motivated by this connection. The exhibition explores the general topic of Austrian traditional dress, which gained worldwide fame thanks to the Hollywood film. It also highlights the film’s anniversary, as well as the opening of a new museum dedicated to “The Sound of Music” and the Trapp family.
The exhibition displays a selection of items from the Roger Pluijm Collection, acquired by the Salzburg Museum in 2024, as well as a selection of von Trapp family memorabilia from the museum’s own collection. There are also a selection of several dirndls, various drawings and correspondence from the Salzburger Heimatwerk’s holdings on display. The Salzburger Heimatwerk’s in-house tailoring workshop has reinterpreted three costumes worn by Julie Andrews in the film. Matching children’s versions were created by the Salzburg-based company Babogi. This exhibition offers a sneak preview of the forthcoming “Sound of Music Salzburg – Museum for The Sound of Music and the Trapp Family”, which is due to open in Hellbrunn in 2026.
